Life always dishes out the most unplanned and unexpected events for you, and most of the time, there are no indications on what the events will be about.

My husband and I woke up way past noon on Father’s Day. We just wanted something to eat before going to Digital Mall and then come straight back home for another Priston Tale gaming session. It was our day off having already celebrated Father’s Day on Saturday, so we just wanted to do things at our own pace.

But no. Nope. Life had something else planned for us…

On our way to Kanna Curry House, a popular Indian restaurant in SS2, we saw something in the middle of the road, not quite moving but not quite dead either. At first, we thought it was a pile of rags. Upon moving closer, we saw that it was a helpless kitten stuck in the middle of two lanes with cars speeding by on both sides of it! Oh, the horrors of it and how dreadful it must have been for the kitten.

My husband did a quick u-turn, parked the car at the side of the road, and quickly went to rescue it before another car came by. I’m saddened to see how people can just carry on with their lives when there is a helpless and stranded animal in the middle of the road. These people weren’t driving slow either! It was a residential area yet they were driving as if they were on the highway. It was awful.

As my husband brought it closer, I noticed that one of its paws was injured. At first glance, we thought it was caused by a car accident. Luckily for us, we found a spare box in the boot of our car and decided to bring it to a vet for a medical checkup. We definitely couldn’t leave this one out here on its own and risk itself becoming roadkill.

So we called every veterinary clinic that Google could locate for us and found one that was opened until 6.30pm. It was 4.30pm when we found the little one. It wasn’t too far for us to get there, considering how close it was to our home, except that we had already driven out and that meant we had to backtrack and head back towards the opposite direction. Also, we still hadn’t eaten when we found the kitten.

Still, we plodded on. We eventually found the clinic, and passed the kitten over to the vets. Lots of saline baths and medical treatment later, the kitten is now cleaned up and swathed in clean towels and given another box to sleep in for the night.

The cause for the injury to its leg was still unknown by the time we left. Our initial concern of a possible car accident was erased. Thankfully. But then came another concern that it could have been someone who intentionally tried to injure it! According to the vets, the scars on its leg resembles that of flesh being tied with a string or wire, which caused the material to cut deep into his skin. It was either that or it may have gotten its leg stuck in something and injured it when it tried to yank it out.

Whatever it was that caused it so much pain, I’m glad its ordeal is now over. Safe and sound at the hands of the vets until we pick it up later. My cousin has offered to foster it and look after it until it is older and is able to go to a new home.

I’ve said this once before, when my husband plucked a puppy out from under a car whose driver was trying to reverse despite knowing that there was a puppy underneath it. And I’ll say it again now that he’s carried out another rescue mission. I’m glad I chose the right person to be my husband.

What a day for us though. And thank God we saved it before the weather changed. Because it started to rain so heavily after that, that rescuing a kitten in that weather would have left us both at home and in bed with a fever.
