A whole bunch of quotes exist where lemons are concerned. You have probably heard of some, like:

  • When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
  • When life gives you lemons, ask for tequila and salt.
  • When life gives you lemons, throw them back (really, really hard!)
  • When life gives you lemons, keep them because hey, free lemons!

There are probably more than the 4 examples above but no, I’m not going to entertain you with lemon quotes. There’s Google, you can use it.

I’m here to tell you that if and when life gives you lemons, seriously, make lemon water or honey lemon juice out of them. Because you damn well know that lemons are a wonderful sources of vitamin C and a whole lot of other goodness for your health! Don’t throw them back (even if you wanted to, real hard) and don’t ask for any tequila and salt. Lemons are good for your health and it’s time to make them work for you.

What can lemons do for us?

Well, there are at least 16 good reasons why you should be keeping those lemons, and here are the reasons why. For all you TL;DR-ers, below is an infographic on the values of lemons. Or, you can keep calm and carry on reading after that for more information too.

INDIGESTION & CONSTIPATION: Your options are fresh lemon or lime soda, which acts as a blood purifier and a cleansing agent, with lemon or lime juice, cold water, soda, and salts as your key ingredients. For a dash of sweetness, add sugar or honey. For added flavour, add mint leaves or crushed fennel seeds. Do this whenever you have a heavy meal, and your guts will be ever so grateful to you.

FEVER: Did you know that lemon juice can help to break fevers by increasing perspiration? No? Yeah, neither did I. But now we do, so we can use it to our advantage too!

DENTAL CARE: Apply fresh lemon juice is on the area of a toothache, and it can help get rid of the pain. Or you can massage the juice on the gums to stop them from bleeding and eliminate the bad odours that can come from various gum diseases and conditions at the same time. You can also use it to cleanse your teeth by using toothpaste that has lemon in its ingredients, or adding a drop of lemon juice onto your normal toothpaste.

HAIR CARE: Apply the lemon juice to your scalp to treat problems like dandruff, hair loss, and other problems related to the hair and scalp. If you do apply lemon juice directly onto the hair, it can give your hair a natural shine.

SKIN CARE: As a natural antiseptic medicine, it can also cure skin-related problems. You can use lemon juice to reduce the pain of sun burn, and ease the pain from bee stings as well. It is also good for acne and eczema by acting as an anti-aging remedy and can remove wrinkles and blackheads, while a concoction of honey lemon drink can leave your skin with a healthy glow.

BURNS: The application of lemon juice on the site of old burns can help the scars to fade, and since lemon is a cooling agent, it will help to reduce the burning sensation on the skin as well, if you currently have an irritating burn.

NOSE BLEEDS: With its antiseptic and coagulant properties, lemons can stop nose bleeds when the juice is applied to a small cotton ball and place it inside your nose.

WEIGHT LOSS: Many people swear by drinking lemon juice mixed with lukewarm water and honey as a means to help in weight loss. I still have yet to see the effects of it, though.

RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS: Lemon juice can bring some much-needed relief for you if you have any respiratory problems and other breathing-related problems. It can soothe a person suffering from an asthma attack and helps to deal with more long-term respiratory disorders because of its richness in vitamin C.

CHOLERA: This is another thing I didn’t know that lemon juice could help. Apparently it can treat diseases like cholera and malaria, because it acts as a blood purifier.

FOOT RELAXATION: Lemon is an aromatic and antiseptic agent which comes in handy in foot relaxation. Just add some lemon juice to warm water and dip your feet in the mixture for instant relief and muscle relaxation. I should really try this one day. Now I just need to buy more than one lemon!

RHEUMATISM: It is also a diuretic, and can treat rheumatism and arthritis by flushing the bacteria and toxins out from your body.

CORNS: Lemon juice dissolves lumps on the skin, so it can be applied at the places where the skin has hardened up, like the soles of your feet and the palms of your hands. Now THIS is exactly why I need lemons in my life. I have those darn corns that refuse to go away and leave me alone!

THROAT INFECTIONS: Lemon is an excellent fruit that fights against problems related to throat infections, due to its well-known antibacterial properties. Pity I didn’t take lemons when I had my sore throat. I bet it would have cost me less than a doctor’s medical bill too!

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: Drinking lemon juice is good for people suffering from heart-related problems because it contains potassium. Take control of your mental stress, depression, high blood pressure, dizziness, and nausea by drinking lemon juice to give your mind and body a calming sensation.

Now you see why you should keep ’em lemons if life gave them to you? Whatever you do, don’t throw them back. Use them for yourself and believe me, you will soon be asking life to give you more lemons.
